Saturday Morning House League Season starts this weekend
Submitted By Craig Metzger on Tuesday, September 30, 2008
Seaforth Minor Hockey's Saturday morning House League season starts this Saturday with a new format. If you've signed up to participate in House League games be sure to check the team sites under "House League" to the left and look at the various team rosters to find which team you're on.

For more information on the changes to Saturday morning House League, please read on...

The league will contain six teams playing in a single division. Some of the names for the teams have changed from previous years with this year's teams being (click on the team name to go the team's web page):
    Home Town Green
    Home Town White

The format change involves a switch to a 3on3 or 4on4 and a renewed emphasis to ensure players of relatively equal ability are on the ice against each other.

The 3on3 or 4on4 format reduces the number of players on the ice allowing for a more open style of play.

Also, new will be the elimination of face-offs as there will only be the one face-off to start the game. After that, whenever the buzzer goes the players on the ice will immediately stop playing and proceed directly to their bench and the players coming on the ice will skate behind their net and into the play. In addition, when an off-side occurs or a goal is scored the team that went off-side or scored the goal must give the puck to the other team and tag up before resuming play. As well when a penalty occurs the referee will blow the whistle and give possession of the puck to the non-penalized team and play resumes. A note of the number of penalties is kept and at the end of each game each team is awarded a number of penalty shots equal to the number of penalties their opponent incurred.

In previous years up to a quarter of the ice time for a game was being lost in player changes and face-offs. With the change there will be much more action, skating, and hockey being played.

Due to the number of players playing house league their will only be six teams this year which meant no more junior or senior division - all players will be distributed among the six teams. To ensure that highly skilled players are not put on the ice against players who are just learning the game all players on each team will be assigned a letter grouping (A, B, C, or D). The A group is the highest group and players in the A classification can only play on A lines. B players can play on B lines as well as up on A lines. The lines will go on the ice sequentially with A first then B then C then D then A etc. It will be the responsibility of each coach to ensure that only players eligible to play with the line who's turn it is to be on the ice are actually on the ice. This will mean there will be some juggling going on to ensure the skill/ability match-ups remain as close as possible.

More details on the rules are found on the menu above under House League.

The goal is to have fun and enjoy a friendly game of the wonderful sport of hockey.

Note: It may take a couple weeks for the "kinks" of the new format to get worked out and for all the players and coaches to get familiar with it. Please be patient and understanding as we do our best. Thanks.
