When registering for next season, you will notice two major changes:
1. In general fees have increased approximately 20%
2. Fundraising expectations will be equally distributed among registrants by having Draw Tickets issued at 1 book per registrant

I have included an excerpt from our last board meeting as a way to provide you with a detailed understanding how we arrived at the change in fee schedule:

7. Registration Fees & Budget for 2011-12 Season

A budget/registration fees meeting was held on February 23 to prepare a plan to meet our organization’s 2011-2012 financial obligations and alleviate the deficit which has accumulated over the last two seasons.

After reviewing expenses and revenue (including registrations), it is estimated that at the end of this season SMHA will be carrying a deficit of $29,000 which currently works out to approximately $125 per registrant.

This accumulated deficit is a combination of many factors such as:

• expense increases

• 09/10 Tournament losses

• 09/10 Deficit incurred when fees were not raised to cover operating costs; mainly as many of the previous Executive believed it would have created hardship for many families during the recession and that an increase

in registration costs would lead to a loss in registrants, thus further decreasing income.

Basic Calculation of Expenses/Registrants Cost/Registrant

2007-08 $146,567 262 $559

2008-09 $154,376 242 $638

2009-10 $163,090 215 $759

2010-11 $163,000 221 $738

Understanding Income Shortfalls for 2010/2011 season:

• our registration income was down dramatically from what was projected (a $20,000 shortfall)

• 2010/11 Gate Receipts are down – on numerous occasions people running the door have showed up late or not at all

• Fundraising goal is not expected to be realized this season

• Projected sponsorship for 09/10 jerseys was not met

• HST 8%

Increases in expenses for 2011-2012 are projected in the following areas:

• 2.5% increase in ice costs (confirmed - already announced by Arena Board)

• Increase in referees’ game fees (expected)

Implemented or planned implementation to ensure improved budgeting:

• Projected income from sources such a bond hours, fundraising and advertising will be more conservative

• Proposals to securing additional revenue through grant applications

• Work to develop partnerships with youth oriented organizations to assist with organizations desire to develop & grow

• Fundraising expectations will be equally distributed among registrants by having Draw Tickets issued at 1 book per registrant at a cost of $100 which can be recouped by the

registrant when tickets are sold.

• Registration fee increases will be fair and closer to actual operating costs

• Tighter controls will be investigated for Door Duties, to insure revenue is at a maximum.

• Additional Power Skating Sessions may be held to increase revenue.

• Tournaments will be held, as they were profitable this year.

• Auditors have also been added to assist with how we function.

• Budget reports will be more detailed

• Thorough equipment inventory will take place this summer

• Active player recruitment.

The above proposals are projected to meet the expense obligations for the upcoming season and reduce the outstanding debt by at least half.

As a result of the aforementioned discussion SMHA rates for 2011/12 are as follows

House League Only $400

Mites $400

Novice $540

Atom $540

PeeWee $570

Bantam $570

Midget $600

Juvenile $630

HL for Travel players $100

Please note that if the increase in fees will make it difficult for you to play this year, there are a number of options available for assistance that we can discuss with you. We encourage all families who may benefit from such assistance to talk with either myself, the registrar and/or treasurer to confidentially discuss options. It is the desire of this executive that every child who wishes to play minor hockey in our system gets the chance and trust that we are doing all that we can to ensure no player is left behind.

After you have taken time to read the material, if you have any ideas/questions please feel free to contact us

also note that by registering in March this does allow you to spread your payment out Mar, June, Sept. Nov. and if required you are welcome to set up a payment plan for any or all other months up till Dec. We find those that do register in Mar. are better able to budget as it does not become such a large sum of money which familes find to be the case the longer you wait to register! We can also provide you with direction for other sources of funding the earlier you come to register or contact our Registrar.
