Midget LL in Tough, Drop Back-to-Back vs. Kincardine
Submitted By smorton on Sunday, December 16, 2012
They say effort sometimes isn't reflective of the scoreboard and that could be said of the Midget Local Leaguers as they battled hard last Sunday night but fell 8-3 to the visiting Kincardine Kanucks.

The Stars got off to a great start in this one but a few defensive breakdowns and some penalty trouble cost them big.

After giving up the opening goal, the Stars came back with a little bit more aggression. They displayed some calm puck control and started charging to the Kincardine net and it paid off.

With three minutes remaining in the opening frame, the Stars forced a scramble in front of the Kanuck goal. Forward Doug Brindley was on the receiving end of a generous rebound and he roofed the disc to tie things up at ones.

It worked once, why not try it again!!.. Just 30 seconds later, Winger Willy Riggenburg found linemate Liam Krahn on the Kincardine doorstep. Krahn made no mistake to bulge the twine and the Stars were ahead 2-1. That was the fastest two-goal splurge by the Midget Local Leaguers so far this year.

"These boys can compete," said Head Coach Bruce Morton just before game time. "They put out the effort and they want to learn. It's the small lapses and gaps in concentration that hurt."

And hurt it would. Soon after taking the lead the Stars ran into some penalty trouble and the Kanucks made them pay. Kincardine popped in three straight goals in two minutes to take a 4-2 lead and suck the wind out of the sails of the Stars.

Seaforth, however, did have one more say in the matter before the second period was out and it was one for the highlight reel.

With the Kincadine defence getting themselves organized in their own zone, Stars forward and leading scorer Luke Melady snuck in from behind the net, snatched the puck from a surprised Kanuck defenseman, strolled out untouched in front of an equally surprised Kanuck netminder and slid the puck perfectly to the long side of the net. The Stars had closed the gap to 4-3 and it was a new game.

"That was crazy lucky but it was sic," said Melady. "I'll take it as it comes."

At least we thought it might be a new game, but the Kanucks had other plans. Kincardine widened the lead to
5-3 just before the end of the second stanza and opened up the cannons in the third. They ripped through the third period with three more unanswered goals to skate home with the 8-3 victory.

The Stars' next contest is Monday, December 17th when they face off in Listowel. The puck drops at 9:20 pm.
